white screen when minecraft is opened

whenever i launch minecraft the launcher stays on a white screen which says loading. I have tried reinstalling minecraft and this has not worked.
This is the first time i have downloaded minecraft on this computer using my old minecraft account which i had to switch over too the new Java edition. i don't know if this will be the cause of the problem but it is probably worth mentioning.
