Game won't open beyond pressing the "PLAY" button on the launcher

I have been playing consistently for the past few weeks with no problems launching until today. My MacBook Pro updated overnight, which might be the culprit of this issue. Every time I press the PLAY button, the "Java" icon appears on my dock and the process halts there. From here, I can only force quit Java, prompting the launcher to reopen and present to me an apology notice.

Under "Settings", I only have "Automatically ask Mojang for assistance..." enabled; under "Launch options" and "Latest release", I have none of the options enabled whatsoever.

I am rather computer illiterate, and could use some help as soon as possible.
