Extreme lag spikes

Was playing in a Realms server on the latest version of Minecraft. I was in a jungle biome chopping down the large 2x2 trees. I spiraled to the top and upon mining the rest of the way back down I got extreme amounts of lag. (From 70 fps to 5 fps) It only happens on these large jungle trees from what I've seen.
