Going On Old Versions Crashes Computer

When Loading old versions of Minecraft from the launcher after playing for about 3-5 mins, it completely freezes my computer to the point that I have to hard reset. It works fine in the newer versions like 1.13 or 1.5 but any older than beta 1.4 cannot be played for a long period of time
