Launcher freezes while downloading new version

Often while trying to download a new version of the game my launcher freezes and stays open for a long time. Eventually Minecraft opens with the launcher still frozen and runs normally. This doesn't affect gameplay but can be misleading as I have no clue when the download has finished.
