Launcher is failing, seeing issues that have to do with folders and directories

Right so as stated before this is a brand new laptop so the computer isn't the issue, or it shouldn't be. When I go to actually try and play the game the launcher opens so I hit play game and a message comes up saying "LAUNCH FAILED: The version you are trying to play inherits properties from an unknown version" or I will get a message which says "Error unable to create directory."

I am playing a modded version of minecraft but I tried to play by creating a file with no mods and still got the same message. I also cannot delete any files.
