When trying to join a friends' online session, I get kicked out to the main screen with an error saying "unable to use online services, please try again later"

Additional info:
Have registered and linked an MS account to my game and am playing with Switch Online purchased.
Can start online play sessions by myself.
Others cannot join my own created online session > they get the same "unable to use online services" error

Have also tried creating a second MS account and using that to sign in but did not affect the issue.
