Player unintentionally fires arrow at non-hostile mob while both riding in boat

One night (in-game) while riding in a boat with my newly tamed wolf I fired an arrow at a hostile mob aimed away from my passenger. I only fired a single arrow which went behind me and killed the wolf which also never appeared on land.
