Elytra doesn't work at all in the full release of 1.9.

I was trying out new things in the full release, but what happened to my friend and me that we tried to use the Elytra and it didn't work.

What happened:
Me: /give @p elytra 1 0

{Unbreakable:1}

Me: /tp @p ~ ~50 ~
I just fall down and die.
