Logging off on a horse -> Horse disappeared restarting the game

I logged out yesterday while riding a horse wearing gold armour.
When I logged in today the horse was gone, and I fell from the height where I had been situated.
unfortunately I have no pictures or anything, it happened on loading the world and caught me entirely off guard.
