Eating bread duplicates shield

I had eaten some bread in survival mode with an undyed shield in the offhand slot and after I finished eating, another shield appeared in the next hotbar slot so I ended up holding two shields, one I had made and was in my offhand slot, and another that just appeared out of nowhere.
