Skin on multi player no working?

On a multiplayer server I recently changed my skin, however it does not appear I appear as Steve or Alex. Others can see my skin just fine but I can't see it and everyone else also appears and Alex or Steve. I do not understand why this is happening and it needs to be fixed. I have restarted my game many times and closed it reopened it etc. I have searched it everywhere and have gotten no luck. My old skin worked but when I updated it, it stopped working first showing a broken skin (black and white blocks everywhere) and then I became Alex (but I use the steve format not alex). Please help me.
