Mobs take damage when they are 1 block or more under ground

When I dig down a couple block and chicken, or cows follow me they take damage while going back up the dirt blocks. Chickens and baby cows die. Not sure if its 1 block tall mobs or all?
I'm on 1.9 windows 7 professional 64 bit intel core i5
