Respawning after death causes immense lag, Minecraft runs out of memory

When playing in a single player world on the Minecraft 1.9 pre-release, I went into survival and fell to my death. Upon respawning, I experienced tremendous lag and my game froze for about 10 seconds. To test it, I killed myself again and respawned, and this time Minecraft ran out of memory.
