Stuff disappears in hopper connected furnaces

I made 4 furneses connected to 8 hoppers.
1 for coal and 1 for the stuff I want to smelt.
when I want to smelt stuff I put stuff in the upper chest.
then the hoppers put it in the furneses but sometimes a stack of coal. disappears. and sometimes the stuff I want to smelt disappears as well.
