attempted to use a silk touch 1 book with a diamond shovel on an anvil didnt work stole xp

im playing on a survival server with a few friends and i found a book of enchanting which had silk touch 1 and tried to use on a diamond shovel by using the anvil. i put them in the right spot picked up the enchanted shovel but when i left the GUI they fell on the floor and i lost my xp
