Creepers explode after you die

A creeper and a skeleton were following me. The skeleton shot and killed me and I dropped all my items. But then the creeper came up and exploded. When I respawned and came back, most of my items had been exploded by the creeper, even though I was dead before it exploded. Why does this happen?
