Can't open launch Minecraft after download on Linux

After downloading Minecraft 1.8.9, it is unable to launch and gives an error and causes launching terminal to hang.

Error: Could not find or load main class net.minecraft.client.main.Main.

Did not effect versions 1.8.0 through 1.8.8.
