Mob/Player model is chopped in boat

In boats, the water disappears occasionally. This seems intended, to make it more realistic, but it also chops part of the player/mob model off, as seen in picture.
To recreate:
put a boat in some water
wait until the water disappears from the boat
get in/push a mob in to the boat.
