Blocks don't disappear when mined

This seems to be happening in survival worlds only.

1. Begin punching a block (any block) to mine it.
2. Block breaks and I hear the sound of it breaking but the block remains intact.
3 About 2 seconds later with no buttons being pressed the block breaks and drops correctly.

I'm not experiencing any lag in the game so this seems quite odd.
