Game would not allow movement or block destruction

What I expected to happen was...:
destroy the block and get out of the water..

What actually happened was...:
Block would reappear after I destroyed it, and then I could not move or jump and then the game crashed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Moving forward into a ravine/ditch with water
2. tried to remove block with diamond sword
3. tried to jump out, but would not let me because the block kept reappearing
