flying through blocks when stopped shifting in mid-air

Ok so when I fly upwards into a block then stop flying i stay there in mid air. Then I press shift and space at the same time to place a command block whilst staying still. Upon letting go of the shift key (but keeping my space bar pressed) I will fly through the block above me.
