Cannot get horse out of boat.

I saw that multiple entities can ride in a boat together. My mule got into the boat, now I can't get it out. I can only right click to target and mount the horse, cannot target the boat to destroy it.

I expected to be able to jump the horse out of the boat, or enter the boat.
