Minecraft crashing whenever a server IP is posted in.

I've had this issue for a while, I only assumed that someone else had the same issue however it's stopped me playing with other people because I can't type IP's in without a MC crash. I can't remember what version this was a part of however I've known of it for a while. If the server.dat file is still alive in the folder the game will always crash until the file is deleted however that removes all of my servers.

EDIT: I've tried reinstalling .minecraft clean by getting rid of everything and still no solution.

EDIT: I tried downloading a new installer and that seemed to fix the issue.
