Bottle o' Enchanting not giving exp

traded with villager for 2.5 stacks of Bottles o' enchanting. Tried to throw entire stack against the ground (sand). Nothing happened, no exp, no exp orbs, nothing. Took rest and put each one individually in a slot and threw it and worked fine.
