Ender-dragon Pillars spawn under the map

I created a new world to test out the new Enderdragon AI that was supposed to be more aggressive. The fight went fine however once he went to his little altar to breathe purple flames at me i notice that he was regenerating his health from what seemed like underground. I followed his healing beam and came across 2 pillars that were under the map.
