Custom placed End Gateway creates lag when inside if no destination is set

I created an End Gateway in the overworld using the setblock command.
At first I didn't set any destination for the gateway to transport me to. When I went into the gateway it reduced my fps from 60 to about 10. Also, when I come close my fps drops a bit but it's almost not noticable. I would say from 60 to 50.
