End Gateway Portal teleport to nowhere

In creative world, in creative gamemode.
I killed mr dragon, enderpearl'd into the gateway portal, that worked correctly.

When I tried to enderpearl back thru the portal, I wound up in an end void.

No land that I could see anywhere. I killed my player to get out.
