Items picked up doesn't automatically go to secondary hand

I was mining, torch in secondary hand, pickaxe in primary hand. I broke a torch, picked it up and it went to my main inventory instead of adding to the amount I had in my secondary hand.
Not sure if this was meant to be, but I'm reporting just in case.
