Falling into void in unloaded chuncks not causing dameage at -64

I was playing on a server with a few friends and we came upon an unloaded chunk.
I jumped in, expecting to die at -64, but i did not. I fell for a few minutes before disconecting,and when I joined back I took damage as normal.
