Newly planted seeds connected to melon/pumpkin

I had planted a melon plant, waited for it grow and produce a melon. After it had produced the melon, I accidentally destroyed the stem/plant before breaking the melon block. I then planted the seed again and it attached to the melon block before fully growing.

How to reproduce: Hoe dirt and plant a melon seed. Then place a melon right next to it.
