Hopper conecting to blocks

I was trying to make a simple chest/hopper cart system and I noticed that even if I placed the chest first, while blocks are next to it, you have to place the chests, then the hopper the the block, otherwise it will get to the connected to a block as if the block was a chest. Please sort as it will make Hoppers easier to use.
