Throwing an ender pearl into a nether portal from the nether can cause the chunk to reset on the other side

I threw an ender pearl into a nether portal when I was in the nether. It caused the server to crash. Then, upon relogging, the chunk in the overworld that had the portal in it was reset to its original condition, rermoving all modifications of terrain.
