Discoloration when breaking blocks at an angle

When a block is undergoing the mining animation, it is possible to see a discoloration on some sides.

The discoloration is only visible if you are looking at the north or south face of the block, from the west, at a near-horizontal angle. It also only happen in some parts of the world, I havn't been able to narrow it down further.
