Minecraft server crashing

I downloaded the Minecraft.exe file from Mojang and have been playing on it with a few friends for a couple of weeks and yesterday the server application would crash after being open for 5 minutes or so and my friends could no longer join. I was still able to join the server for the brief period that it stays open. All that I have changed since starting the server was an update to Java.
