seeds are breaking when im placing them

when I place seeds they break

what I expected to happen was the seeds would be regularly placed on the farmland

what actually happened was I placed the seeds in the farmland and they broke

1. I made 4 dispensers in a row that was above the farm by 1 block
2. I filled the space around the farmland with water and placed blocks above it so the automated farm wouldn't break
3. the seeds broke when I placed them and they can only be placed diagonally, even if its seeds/carrots/potato's but I can place it for three rows
