Random Items Replace Boots in Armor Slot

When I destroy carrots or torches and pick them up before they touch the ground, they replace my iron boots in the feet section of the armor inventory. I've lost 2 pairs of iron boots on my server but I haven't bee able to reproduce the glitch in singleplayer. It happens often in SMP though.
