Inside of a Hopper is darker when surrounded by blocks

It seems if a hopper is placed with blocks surrounding it, the inside is almost black. In the picture, the two hoppers on the left are surrounded by blocks, and the one on the right isn't. You can easily see the one on the right is considerably brighter.
