Map data in 1.8 does not meet at edges

I use maps zoomed out to zoom level #4 and there is a wide area of unmapped space at the edge of maps, which creates invisible tracts of terrain where maps meet. I have underground minecart tracks running thousands of blocks which are now aligned under this unmapped space, and settlements on these tracks cannot be seen on maps.
