When clearing water with sponges, sometimes lily pads will keep floating

The bug

Sometimes when you clear water with sponges, lily pads will keep floating, if you place blocks next or under it, it's fine, but if you bug a block on the lily pad, it will be replaced.

How to reproduce

1. Make a 5 × 5 pool of water as demonstrated in the attached picture. It doesn't seem to work in lakes/rivers
2. Fill it with water
3. Place lily pads on the water, the more you place, the better, it will just increase the chance just leave a hole to place a sponge in the water
4. Place the sponge where you left the hole
