Cant place paintings and item frames on signs

In 1.7 i was able to make 'laptops' by placing a sign on the side of a pressure plate and then placing a painting or itemframe on the sign. Ever since i updated to 1.8 I can no longer do that. The laptops I had made before 1.8 still stand.
