I started a single player world during minecraft 1.6. When I updated to 1.8 I went in search of a horse. When I got back my whole cillagetting was destroyed and all my chests were gone

I expected my whole vilage and all my supplies to be their when I got back with my horse.
When I got back with my horse my building were all partially destroyed, or completely destroyed. All my valuables and chests were gone when I got back.
1. IDK what trigered my village to be destroyed.
