Blocks reappear after they are destroyed, then disappear after a few seconds.

Playing single player survival mode. Blocks will reappear for a few seconds after I break them, then they will disappear again. I can start to break them after they reappear but they will disappear before they break. Couldn't find any fixes online, the ones I tried didn't work. I am very far from the spawn point, I am not using any mods at all, and I am playing single player and it is not open to LAN. Minecraft worked fine in the past but I had not played for awhile and the issue only began when I updated Minecraft to version 1.8.1.
