map broke

After creating a map and scaling it to 1:16(both were done in the overworld) I brought it with me in my inventory to the nether. It was not in my hotbar and was not used or moved around in my inventory while in the nether, but when I came out it acted as if I was still in the nether. The cursor was not on the map at all.
