Audio not working on new download and install of Minecraft 1.8.1

Just downloaded and installed Minecraft 1.8.1. Audio has not worked at all although audio works fine outside of Minecraft (eg, in Windows and other apps). Audio settings are all set to 100% in the Minecraft Music & Sounds settings
