Fence gates and doors won't open after exiting nether portals with item in hand

What I expected to happen:
Fence gate to close after i right click on it

What actually happened:
door would open and then snap shut

steps to reproduce
1. leave door or fence gate closed
2. enter nether portal
3. go back through nether portal
4. try to open door or fence gate with an item in hand
