offline LAN play does not work

home network on the same router - ip addresses 192.168.1.19 for one computer and 192.168.1.14 for another computer Windows 7 OS on both machines. Following the instructions - the 2nd computer can't see the game hosted on the first computer. Tried entering ip address:port provided from host computer on 2nd computer - also tried just entering port number. It doesn't work - in internet searches it seems like this might be a known issue.
