Minecraft will not open

When I launched Minecraft, it had the symbol for "java" on my apps bar, but it had no window open. I've tried clicking on it, but nothing happened. I have looked everywhere to find the window. The only way to stop it running is to force restart my mac. When I click and hold on it, it says "Application not responding"
