Spawn Point not working through command blocks

Spawnpoint Through Commandblocks not working. When pressing a button to activate the commandblock (attempted with redstone wire/repeater connecting button signal to block and with button directly on the block)
Command entered in block spawnpoint @p X Y Z also tried spawnpoint X Y Z
and checking the commandblocks output it just says "- "

steps to recreate
1. enter spawnpoint into block
2. apply redstone signal (for this case used a stone and wooden button)
3. kill self

(couldn't find another report of this exact issue with spawnpoint. how ever if someone else has made it... well yea sorry.)
