Very little monsters spawning in dark area.

I have made a mob grinder, but no monsters spawn inside. The inside of the mob grinder is completely dark. I usually have to wait around 5 minutes for 2 monsters to spawn. Monsters are spawning fine in the empty fields, but not in my spawner.
